HUNTERSVILLE – One driver was extricated and taken to the hospital after a single-vehicle wreck on I-77 around 9am Wednesday. The crash backed up traffic for a couple of hours on I-77 southbound in Huntersville and Cornelius.

The wreck happened late in the morning rush hour, when the car went off the northbound side of I-77 just north of Exit 23/Gilead Road, Huntersville Fire Department reported. The car traveled across the median and the southbound lanes and crashed into the woods on the I-77 southbound side.
Huntersville Fire Department, North Meck Rescue and Medic units responded. At one point, a medical helicopter was called, but later canceled.
The driver had to be extricated from the car, and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with potentially life threatening injuries, MEDIC reported. No further information was available.
