Man charged with shooting at police, assault

special-buttons_blotterA Cornelius man is facing multiple charges after police accused him of shooting at them Friday night as they responded to a report of a domestic dispute at his home on Peninsula Cove Lane.

Police were called to 18724 Peninsula Cove Lane around 11pm Friday to check on an alleged domestic assault where a suspect had struck his wife. As the woman met officers outside the home, someone inside fired a shot toward them. Police rushed woman away from the scene, and two more shots were fired in their direction.

Silence followed, and police learned two young children were still in an upstairs bedroom at the house.

A Special Response Team was called to the scene, and police attempted to contact the man, without success. The team broke into the house and after a brief scuffle arrested the him. He had a minor head injury during the arrest and was taken to a hospital for treatment, then transferred to Mecklenburg County Jail.

The woman and children and police officers were not hurt.

Charles McKinley Saine, 41, was charged with assaulting a female, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, discharging a firearm in the town limits and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer. He was released on $23,000 bond and is due in court on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Davidson and Mooresville police also assisted.
