The wreck brought traffic to a halt southbound, while northbound traffic also snarled because of onlooker delays.

At the scene, a maroon Chevy Tahoe SUV was on its roof, doors open. All drivers and passengers were out the vehicles fairly quickly, and two were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Conrelius-Lemley Fire Deparment.

Three other cars in the left lane appeared to have collided as they stopped short to avoid the SUV. The road was slick because of rain that started after 8am.

Firefighters, police and Medic responded to the crash, which was on the inside lane of I-77 about 1/4 mile south of the highway on ramp.

No further information was immediately available.

Firefighters cleared the scene within about 30 minutes after two patients were taken to the hospital. (David Boraks/CorneliusNews.net)

Peter Michael Jordan

The family of Peter Michael Jordan is appealing for help with the investigation into the Feb. 19 murder of the 19-year-old Cornelius man at a Huntersville apartment complex. The Jordan family said Wednesday they are offering a $5,000 reward for information.

The family also has started a Peter Michael Jordan Memorial Fund to help pay for the reward.

In a statement issued Wednesday through Huntersville Police, the Jordan family asked for privacy as well as help understanding what happened on the night of the fatal shooting. “The family asks that their privacy remain intact and media outlets respect their wishes and allow them time to grieve,” police said Wednesday.

Here’s the statement:

WHO DID THIS TO PETER AND WHY?

A fun-loving 19 year old boy, who has touched the lives of so many, was killed on Wednesday, February 19th, 2014. His grieving mom, step-father, sister, brothers, family and friends want to know why he was killed at gun point.

Peter was born in New York City and moved to North Carolina with his mom when he was 11 years old. His mom built a beautiful home in Cornelius where she thought it would be a safe and happy place to raise her son.

Peter attended Bradley Middle, Bailey Middle, Lake Norman Charter and Hough High School. He enjoyed playing the keyboard, guitar and drums. He made many friends in North Carolina; friends of all ages, sex, race and ethnical backgrounds. His friends looked up to him as a big brother, best friend and true confidant.

They described their relationship with Peter as the person that always had their back, gave them good advice and helped them when they needed help. Peter was known to have a “big heart”, and would give you the shirt off his back. “The gentle giant” as he was sometimes referred to, made his friends and those around him feel he was there to protect them.

The Huntersville Police Department is working around the clock trying to solve this case. Peter’s parents, siblings, friends and relatives are asking anyone with helpful information to contact the Huntersville Police Department or North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers. The family of Peter Jordan is offering a reward of $5,000 to anyone with information that would lead to an arrest of the person or persons responsible for Peter’s death.

The Peter Michael Jordan Memorial Fund has been created and donations can be made at any local Wells Fargo Bank. The funds collected through the memorial fund will be allocated to the reward offered by the family and added to any reward given by Crime Stoppers.

Police say they’ve gotten “numerous tips” since they began their investigation has begun. “At this time we continue to ask the public for their continued help as we remain vigilant locating those responsible for Peter Jordan’s death. No new information will be released about the investigation at this point,” police said Wednesday.

Michael Wise

CHARLOTTE – A 44-year-old Rock Hill, SC, man was sentenced to a prison term Thursday after a jury convicted him of statutory rape for having sex with a girl in Cornelius whom he met on Facebook.

Michael Brian Wise, 44, will serve at least 48 years in jail. He was sentenced after a trial that began Monday, March 17, before Mecklenburg Superior Court Judge Jesse B. Caldwell III.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Crimes Against Persons Team tried Wise for statutory rape and two counts of statutory sex offense. On Thursday, March 20, the jury found him guilty as charged. The judge then sentenced him to three consecutive sentences of 192-291 months in prison, totaling a minimum of 48 years. When he’s released from prison, he will have to register as a sex offender.

According to the district attorney’s office, Wise on Aug. 11, 2012, drove from his home in Rock Hill to Smithville Park, off Catawba Avenue, to meet a 14-year-old girl with whom he had been communicating on Facebook. Wise drove the girl to a nearby parking lot, engaged her in sexual acts and then drove back to the park.

A Cornelius police officer on patrol noticed Wise’s van in the park late that night and approached. When he  discovered Wise with the girl, Wise confessed to the sex acts.

030112MOULTRY,VA jury in Charlotte has found a 46-year-old man guilty of second-degree murder and other charges stemming from a speeding 2012 wreck on Statesville Road that killed a Huntersville man.

The Mecklenburg Superior Court jury on April 4 found Victor Moultry, 46, guilty of murder and other charges in the death of Paul Joseph Jones, 53, in February 2012.

In February 2012, Moultry was driving on West W.T. Harris Boulevard in Charlotte when he drove over the median and into the wrong lane. When he reached Statesville Road/US 21, he turned and struck a vehicle. He then fled the scene, speeding north on Statesville Road.

Witnesses testified that they saw him driving at high  speeds on the wrong side of the road, passing vehicles in a no-passing zone and forcing cars off the road.

He continued on Statesville Road into Huntersville, where he slammed into the rear end of Jones’s 1984 Ford pickup. The crash forced Jones off the road and down a ravine.

Jones was seriously injured and died two days later. He was a self-employed custom cabinet maker.

Investigators found cocaine in Moultry’s car and tests showed cocaine in his blood. Police said Moultry was driving at more than 100 mph at the time of the crash.

Moultry’s trial began March 31, 2014, before Superior Court Judge H. William Constangy. The jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor hit and run.

Judge Constangy sentenced Moultry to 207-261 months (17 1/4 to 21 3/4 years) in prison , as well as an additional 120 days in custody.

HUNTERSVILLE - North Mecklenburg High School was locked down briefly Tuesday afternoon while Huntersville police investigated a report that there might be a gun on campus.

The school kept students in classrooms near the end of the school day after receiving the report, which ultimately proved false.

“We had a report of a threat, possibly someone bringing a gun onto campus, but that ended up not being true,” police Sgt. Randy Gardner said Tuesday afternoon. Gardner said the person who supposed brought a gun to school wasn’t even on campus at the time.

“We conducted an investigation, spoke with all parties, and it was just a threat,” Gardner said.

Police warn of phone scam seeking pre-paid cards

special-buttons_blotterAfter at least two incidents in the past week, Cornelius police are warning residents and businesses about a phone scam targeting the area. If you get a call about an overdue bill, an unpaid parking ticket or other suspicious request, beware.

Callers have posed as police or utility workers, among others. A police department spokeswoman said Friday that anyone receiving a call like this should not give out personal information. In addition, you can help police by writing down information about the call and trying to get the caller’s phone number.

In one case reported Monday morning, April 28, a 70-year-old Huntersville woman told police she was a victim of the scam. Someone claiming to be a police officer called her and demanded that she pay $2,500 to avoid going to jail. She said the person told her to go to the nearest Rite-Aid and buy 5 GreenDot MoneyPak cards for $500 each. She purchased the items and gave the suspect the card numbers over the phone. The total amount of her loss was $2,524.75.

On Wednesday, a 60-year-old Cornelius woman reported a similar incident. She told police someone called her posing as a Duke Power employee, and demanding that she pay $500 to avoid having her electricity disconnected at her business in Charlotte. The person told her to go to the nearest Walgreen’s and buy 1 GreenDot MoneyPak card for $500. She did so, and as in the previous case, gave the card numbers to the suspect over the phone. Her loss totaled $504.95.

Here’s the alert issued Friday:

Cornelius Police Warn of Phone Scam

The Cornelius Police Department is warning residents and business owners of a recent phone scam in the area. Numerous victims have reported receiving phone calls from representatives from a government agency, law enforcement agency, or utility company making claims about past due tickets, warrants, or past due balances. The caller then tells the victim to purchase a pre-paid debit card with the amount due and read the number off the back of the card to avoid being arrested or losing utility service. Once the money is taken from the victim’s bank account, the bank will not refund the money since the money was voluntarily given away. This is a scam and the suspect’s claims are fraudulent.

If you are contacted by anyone claiming to be affiliated with a municipality, government agency, law enforcement agency, or utility company telling you to pay with a specific pre-paid debit card, do not give them any information or comply with the caller’s request. If possible, write down the caller’s phone number and alert the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773 or your local law enforcement agency.

An SUV overturned on I-77 southbound near Exit 23 on Tuesday afternoon, with reports of injuries. (Brandon Butler/CorneliusNews.net)

Tuesday was a day for traffic-snarling wrecks in north Mecklenburg, beginning with the morning rush hour and continuing Tuesday afternoon.

Accidents after 8am on I-77 southbound near I-85 in Charlotte and near Exit 23 in Huntersville created a backup that at one point stretched nearly from Charlotte to Lake Norman, according to NCDOT and other traffic reports.

That sent many drivers onto the backroads, including NC 115/Main Street through Davidson and Cornelius. It didn’t get any better there.

At around 9:30am, with southbound traffic on NC 115 already backed up, a minor 2-car accident briefly closed the road. A driver in a Subaru wagon struck the left front of a 4-door Toyota sedan. Both drivers appeared to be OK, but emergency crews halted traffic while they cleaned up the scene.

Then at around 3pm, an SUV rolled over near Exit 23 in yet another wreck on I-77 southbound. Passersby found an SUV on its roof in the median, where medical personnel were tending to people who appeared to have minor injuries.

Traffic was stop-and-go from the Lake Norman area to Exit 23, where it regained speed.
