special-buttons_blotterThe school crossing guard at Cornelius Elementary School was seriously hurt after being struck by a car Thursday afternoon on Catawba Avenue near the school. Traffic was being re-routed away from the area as emergency crews responded.

Fire and medical units responded to Catawba Avenue near the school, between School and Washam streets, around 3:45, where someone had been struck.  Medic reported that one person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with life threatening injuries.

At 5:40pm, Cornelius police said the incident involved the school’s crossing guard. His injuries were not known. The accident is still under investigation and no further details were available.

A police spokeswoman did not release the man’s name or say what charges, if any, might be filed against the driver.

Meanwhile, Cornelius Elementary Principal Jessica Holbrook sent the following message to parents Thursday night:

Many of you may have heard our school crossing guard was involved in an accident prior to dismissal this afternoon, April 23rd. No students or staff members were involved in this unfortunate accident, and medic responded within minutes to provide assistance. We will keep our crossing guard in our thoughts, and I will update you with any information I receive. We will also work with the Town of Cornelius to ensure our crosswalk is safe for students and community members.

Thank you,
Principal Holbrook
