A 16-year-old Cornelius bicyclist was hospitalized with minor injuries Sunday evening after she was hit by a car while riding across the driveway of the Harbor View shopping center off West Catawba Avenue. A woman driver blamed her jumping dogs for distracting her after she hit a parked car on Feriba Place Friday. Also, an update on last week’s shooting of a police officer on Coachmans Trace: The 16-year-old suspect is now out of jail.
SHOOTING SUSPECT FREE ON BOND
Sixteen-year-old Greyson Ferrell was released from Mecklenburg County Jail Saturday, May 9, a week after he was charged with shooting a Cornelius police officer who responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the boy’s Coachmans Trace home.
Ferrell posted bond to cover his $1,126,500 bail and was released Saturday at 5:50pm. He is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, possession of a handgun by a minor, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Police said Ferrell was armed, wearing a bullet-proof vest and prepared “to ambush” police as they arrived on the call early on Saturday, May 2. He fired and struck Cornelius Police Lt. James Quattlebaum in the abdomen. Quattlebaum was wearing a bullet proof vest and was released from the hospital two days later.
Ferrell is due back in Mecklenburg County Superior Court this Friday, May 15. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are continuing an investigation into the case. Cornelius Police Department had requested CMPD’s assistance because its officers were involved in the shooting.

SUNDAY, MAY 10, 5:34pm, Harborview Shopping Center, 18000 Block of West Catawba Ave. – A 21-year-old Mooresville woman was exiting the shopping center onto West Catawba when she struck a 16-year-old Cornelius woman riding her bicycle across the driveway. Cornelius Fire Department and Medic responded, putting the cyclist’s left arm in a sling and treating her for a swollen left knee. She was talking an alert, but taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for further treatment. No charges were filed in the wreck.
SUNDAY, MAY 10, 1:41pm, Jetton Road at West Catawba Avenue – A 24-year-old Mooresville woman was east on Jetton Road toward West Catawba Avenue when her 2007 Pontiac struck the rear bumper of a 2009 Jeep driven by 47-year-old Davidson woman. The first driver said she wasn’t paying attention at the light when she struck the other car. The Pontiac had $1,000 damage, the second car had $400 damage. One teenage child in the second car was taken by Medic to Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center with minor injuries. Nobody was charged.
SUNDAY, MAY 10, 12:48pm, Catawba Avenue between US 21 and the I-77 northbound on-ramp – A 45-year-old Mooresville woman in a 2007 Hyundai was westbound on Catawba Avenue in the left lane when she tried to merge into the right lane so she could get on I-77 north. She struck the driver’s side of of a 2011 Hyundai driven by a 42-year-old Huntersville woman. The first car had $400 damage, the second about $800.
SATURDAY, MAY 9, 10:11pm, 19400 block of Center Street – Police were called for a report of a crash, and arrived to find damaged mailboxes at two homes. An officer later located the suspect vehicle, a 2004 Ford, at on Center Street. After an investigation, the driver, a 24-year-old Cornelius man, was arrested and charged with DWI and Hit/Run.
SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2:40pm, North Main Street at Potts Street – A 49-year-old Cornelius woman was headed north on North Main Street when she drove her 1996 Toyota into the rear bumper of a 2015 Honda driven by 65-year-old Cornelius man. The woman said she slowed but couldn’t stop in time when the man slowed to make a left turn on Potts Steet. The woman was issued a citation for driving while license revoked.
FRIDAY, MAY 8, 8:55am, Feriba Place, between Townwood Drive and Weeping Water Run – A 40-year-old Corneluis woman was turning right off Weeping Water Way onto Feriba Place when one of her dogs tried to jump out the window and a second dog was trying to get into her lap. The distraction caused her to collide with a parked car. The driver’s car had $2,000 damage, and the parked car’s damage was estimated at $1,500. No injuries were reported.
THURSDAY, MAY 7, 2:43pm, 19400 block of Pocono Lane – A 47-year-old resident told police that sometime between 9:30am and 12:30pm, someone used his Bank of America credit card number to purchase $315.59 worth of items. Police are investigating.
THURSDAY, MAY 7, 12:50pm, Home Depot, 17111 Statesville Rd. – An employee told police that between April 27 and May 2, someone walked out of the store with several tools and power tools: an Echo 17-inch high powered straight trimmer, valued at $289; A Dewalt 20v max premium combo tool kit, valued at $369.00; 3 Dewalt 20v max premium combo tool kits, valued at $369 each; and a Dewalt Honda 4200 psi pressure washer, valued at $999. Total value of all items stolen was $2,764. Police are investigating.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 9:29am, 19500 block of Waverunner Lane – A resident reported that unknown suspect(s) broke into his 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and stole about $1,500 worth of prescription drugs.
