A motorcyclist escaped serious injury Tuesday night, March 11, when he was struck from behind by a car as both headed onto the Catawba Avenue overpass at I-77 Exit 28. The car’s driver later was cited for failure to reduce speed.
The wreck happened just after 10pm near the I-77 southbound on-ramp from Catawba Avenue. Both the motorcylist, a 17-year-old Smithville resident, and the car driver, a 20-year-old Sterling Bay resident, were headed east on Catawba Avenue onto the overpass.
The motorcycle slowed to stop at a stoplight. The driver was changing lanes and told police later he did not see the motorcycle, and drove into it at about 20 miles per hour, according to an accident report.
The driver was cited for failing to reduce speed. The motorcyclist was not seriously hurt and declined to be transported to the hospital.
