A stolen credit card that was later used in Birkdale helped lead Cornelius police to a suspect who has been charged with a rash of vehicle break-ins on the west side of town.
Phillip Geoffrey Jordan, 21, faces a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges in connection with the thefts. Police said he had been targeting unlocked vehicles in residential areas along West Catawba Avenue between Robbins Preserve and Mariner Cove, and into the Norman Island area.
Police were investigating a stolen credit card that was used at Walgreens in Birkdale when they viewed a security camera video of the suspect. Based on the location of the break-ins, detectives believed the suspect was local and traveling on foot. They took the suspect’s photo to area apartment complexes where the suspect was recognized.
On Monday, Dec. 15, detectives arrested Jordan at the Redcliffe Apartments. When detectives interviewed him at the Cornelius Police Department, he admitted to breaking into 80 to 100 vehicles in the area.
Jordan faces 8 felony counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, one felony count of identity theft, one felony count of financial card theft, and two misdemeanor counts of larceny. More charges are pending against Jordan and was being held at Mecklenburg County Jail Tuesday with bail set at $10,000.
