Those security camera photos of Monday’s bank robbery at the Carolinas Telco Federal Credit Union on West Catawba Avenue may not be as useful as Cornelius police had hoped. A police spokeswoman said Monday that investigators have determined that the gun-pointing robber was wearing a “high-end” mask.
The photos show what appears to be an older man with a blue-and-white baseball cap and sunglasses waving a pistol at a teller during the robbery. Between that and the blue gloves the man was wearing, it’s hard to tell who he is.
“Detectives now are saying it looks like it’s a high end mask … that would be used to cover the whole head and neck,” spokeswoman Betsy Shores said Wednesday.
Police initially described the man as a white male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, bald with the ball cap, beige pants and dark coat. But the mask, gloves and other clothing completely obscure the robber’s “race, age, and anything like that,” she said.
Police are still investigating the robbery, which was reported at 2:36pm on Monday at the credit union, 20221 West Catawba Ave., near the entrance to the Fresh Market shopping center.
Officers arrived on the scene and found a bicycle behind the branch and nearby shopping center, with a small amount of cash. They believe the thief ditched the bike and escaped in a waiting car behind the Shops at Fresh Market.
Police are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call North Mecklenburg CrimeStoppers at 704-896-STOP (7867) or contact the police department directly at 704-892-7773. Tips also may be provided online at www.corneliuspd.org.
