Tuesday was a day for traffic-snarling wrecks in north Mecklenburg, beginning with the morning rush hour and continuing Tuesday afternoon.

Accidents after 8am on I-77 southbound near I-85 in Charlotte and near Exit 23 in Huntersville created a backup that at one point stretched nearly from Charlotte to Lake Norman, according to NCDOT and other traffic reports.

That sent many drivers onto the backroads, including NC 115/Main Street through Davidson and Cornelius. It didn’t get any better there.

At around 9:30am, with southbound traffic on NC 115 already backed up, a minor 2-car accident briefly closed the road. A driver in a Subaru wagon struck the left front of a 4-door Toyota sedan. Both drivers appeared to be OK, but emergency crews halted traffic while they cleaned up the scene.

Then at around 3pm, an SUV rolled over near Exit 23 in yet another wreck on I-77 southbound. Passersby found an SUV on its roof in the median, where medical personnel were tending to people who appeared to have minor injuries.

Traffic was stop-and-go from the Lake Norman area to Exit 23, where it regained speed.
